How to Measure Your Ring Size at Home Accurately

The wrong ring size can turn a happy purchase into a hassle. Too loose and the ring slips off; too tight and it is hard to remove. If you want to know your ring size before heading to the shop, or you are buying a ring as a surprise, here is how to measure accurately at home.

Method 1: Use string or a paper strip

  • Cut a thin strip of paper or take a piece of string.
  • Wrap it around the base of the finger you want the ring on — not too tight, not too loose.
  • Mark where it meets, then measure the length in millimetres (mm).
  • That length is your finger's circumference. Bring this number to the shop and they can match it to a ring size.

Method 2: Use a ring you already own

If you already have a ring that fits that finger, this is the easiest way:

  • Take a ring that fits comfortably on the right finger.
  • Measure the inside diameter (inner edge to inner edge) in mm.
  • Or simply bring that ring to the shop as a reference.

This method is very handy for a surprise — borrow a ring your partner already wears.

Tips to avoid getting it wrong

  • Measure in the late afternoon or evening. Fingers are slightly larger then, especially in our weather.
  • Do not measure when your hands are cold — fingers shrink and the reading comes out too small.
  • Wide bands feel tighter than thin ones. For a wide design, consider going half a size up.
  • Measure the same finger a few times to make sure the reading is consistent.

Why measuring at the shop is still best

Measuring at home is good for a rough idea, but a proper ring sizer at the shop gives the most accurate reading. You can also try several real sizes on your finger and feel which is most comfortable — something string cannot tell you.

One more advantage: at Kim's Gold, most rings can be resized free within 14 days of purchase. So even if the size is slightly off, it can be corrected.
