Buying Gold for Your Wedding in Melaka: A Practical Guide

Wedding gold is a strange kind of purchase. It is emotional, it is expensive, and most couples only do it once. Then there are the parents, who often have very firm ideas about what "must" be bought.

We see a lot of couples at the counter in the months before their big day. The ones who enjoy the process usually have one thing in common: they started early and knew roughly what they needed before walking in. This guide is everything we wish every couple knew on their first visit.

Start by asking what both families expect

Before you look at a single design, have a short chat with both sets of parents. It saves a lot of awkward moments later.

In Malay weddings, gold often shows up at more than one stage. There may be a ring for the merisik or tanda, a cincin tunang at the engagement, and the cincin nikah at the solemnisation. Some families also place a gold bracelet or necklace in the hantaran trays. How much of this happens varies a lot from family to family, so ask rather than assume.

In Chinese weddings, many families prepare si dian jin (四点金), the "four golden items": a necklace, earrings, a bracelet or bangle, and a ring. They are usually given to the bride by the groom's family and worn during the tea ceremony. Dragon and phoenix bangles are a favourite. Relatives may also gift extra pieces on the day itself.

For many modern couples, the list is simpler: a pair of matching wedding bands they will actually wear every day. That is perfectly fine too.

Once you know which pieces are expected, everything else gets easier.

A simple timeline

When What to do
4 to 6 months before Agree with both families on which pieces are needed. Set a budget in grams.
3 to 4 months before Start browsing. If you want a custom design, order it now and ask how long it takes.
About 2 months before Measure ring sizes properly and buy the main pieces.
2 to 4 weeks before Try everything on again. Resize anything that is not quite right.
After the wedding Keep all receipts together and store each piece separately.

Starting early also means you are never forced to buy on a day the gold price has jumped.

Budget in grams, not just ringgit

Gold jewellery is priced by weight, so it helps to think in grams. Here is a rough example. If 916 gold is around RM 580 a gram (the price moves daily), a 4-gram ring holds about RM 2,320 worth of gold. The final price adds a workmanship fee on top, which depends on the design. Plain bands usually cost less to make than detailed ones, and some designs carry no workmanship fee at all.

Why grams? Because when the gold price shifts between now and your wedding, your plan still works. You only adjust the ringgit, not the whole list.

A question we hear a lot: "Should we wait for the price to drop?" Honestly, nobody can predict that. If it worries you, buy one piece at a time over a few months instead of everything in one day. That spreads the price up and down naturally.

Get the ring sizes right

Ring sizing causes more last-minute stress than anything else. A few tips that help:

  • Measure in the late afternoon or evening. Fingers are slightly bigger then, especially in our weather.
  • Wide bands feel tighter than thin ones. If you choose a wide design, you may need half a size up.
  • Planning a surprise? Borrow a ring your partner already wears on that finger and bring it in.
  • Ask about free resizing. Many gold shops offer it for a limited time after purchase, so check the deadline.

If you are still deciding on a style, it helps to see a few in person first — our 916 gold rings range from plain bands to couple and abacus designs, and most come with free resizing within 14 days.

916 for wearing, 999 for keeping

Most wedding jewellery is 916 gold (22K). It is 91.6% gold and strong enough for daily wear. 999 gold (24K) is softer and better suited to gold bars. Some families like to add a small 999 gold bar to the wedding gifts as savings for the new couple, which is a thoughtful touch.

After the big day

Wedding gold often stays in the family for decades, so a little care goes a long way.

  • Keep the receipts together. They show the weight and purity, which helps with resizing, trading in, or passing pieces on later.
  • Store pieces separately in soft pouches so they do not scratch each other.
  • Take them off before swimming or using bleach and strong cleaners.
  • Get them cleaned and checked once in a while, especially clasps on bracelets and necklaces.

And if, years later, a piece no longer suits your style, it still has value. Many families trade in older wedding gold for a new design instead of letting it sit in a drawer.

Take your time

The best wedding gold is the gold you are happy wearing for the next twenty years, not the piece you rushed into a week before the ceremony. Shop around, ask questions, and choose a gold shop Melaka couples are comfortable with, where you can try things on, take a photo home to show your parents, and come back when you are ready.

If you would like a second opinion, you are welcome to drop by Kim's Gold in Taman Lagenda. No appointment, no pressure. Just bring your list.

Frequently asked questions

How early should we buy wedding gold? Around two to four months before the wedding is comfortable. Custom designs need longer, so order those first.

What is si dian jin? Si dian jin (四点金) means "four golden items": a necklace, earrings, a bracelet or bangle, and a ring. Many Chinese families give them to the bride, often during the tea ceremony.

Is 916 or 999 gold better for wedding rings? 916 gold. It is strong enough for daily wear. 999 gold is softer and better kept as gold bars.

Can wedding rings be resized later? Yes, in most cases. Many shops resize for free within a set period after purchase, so check the time limit and keep your receipt.

Should we wait for the gold price to drop before buying? Nobody can predict gold prices. If you are worried, buy pieces gradually over a few months instead of all at once.
